Trends We Love: Nuetrals + Pastels

Neutrals and pastels are a big trend for Spring 2012. If you choose to wear a neutral tone like soft oatmeals, browns, tans, and grays make it pop with pastel accessories. On the other hand, pair girly pastel shades like blush pink, mint green, and robin's egg blue, with neutral accessories. Whatever you do, make it fun and unique to your personal style. Here is some inspiration . . .

Happy New Year! After a brief holiday hiatus, we are back and ready for 2012!

It’s a new year, and we are excited about it. When we look back at 2011, we are happy to say that we accomplished many of our goals. Our primary goal was to acquire more dresses, which we did. For example, in January 2011, we had approximately 25 evening gowns and 35 cocktail dresses. Right now, we have approximately 125 cocktail dresses and 85 evening gowns and these numbers continue to grow every other week. We also have about 125 wedding dresses in stock. To keep up with our growing inventory, we just recently acquired a 3rd storage unit at the facility where we keep our dresses and expect to add at least one more this year.

Last year, we also learned a lot about the dresses that our customers love to rent and have completely changed our buying model. So how did this change? Now, we always have you and more importantly, where you are going in mind. For example, instead of looking for “cute cocktail dresses” we look for “the perfect dress for dinner date that takes place in the middle of winter” or "the perfect dress for attending a friend's 30th birthday party in the summer". I know that may be more information that you want (or need) to hear, but in a nutshell, this logic helps us to get dresses that you love to rent! And as usual, we always look for dresses that are unique that will help you stand out from the crowd. What is the point in renting a dress that you can find in the mall? We always look for unique and glamorous dresses and many of our styles are popular styles that have sold out and are no longer available in stores.

From day one, our business has been built around our customers. With this in mind, we want to share some of our goals for 2012 with you. All of these goals are based on customer requests that we get from you.

In addition, we will soon be changing our current website from a private site to a public site. So that does this mean for you? This means that you will not need a user ID and password to view or rent dresses. The exciting part is that for those of you that have already signed up for the site will be allowed to remain members, but have special perks that will make your dress rental experience more personalized, convenient and easy. This program includes some awesome perks that very few retailers are doing right now and we are super excited about it!!! All of our memebers will be getting an e-mail about this soon. We will also be changing many of the site features so that you can quickly see what we have in stock and find the dress you are looking for.

While you’re rushing around trying to find perfect presents for everyone on your shopping list, it’s easy to forget about the countless dinners and cocktail parties that come along this time of year. Usually one of the first occasions that seems to sneak up on you is your holiday office party. You probably don’t want to wear the same pencil skirt you wear every other week. But showing too much skin in front of your boss probably won’t go over so well!

While most people have strict dress codes at work, when it comes to dressing up for a holiday party the rules seem blurred. For dresses, we recommend sticking to a classic silhouette with a modest neckline. Our "Polished to Perfection" dress from Laila Azhar is a great option and it is only $50 to rent. Don’t be afraid to work with a hemline that falls above the knee, but that doesn’t mean you should break out the sequins mini you’re saving for New Year’s Eve! A pair of tights, pumps, and an accessory or two is the perfect way to finish off the look. Don’t be afraid to add a bold cuff or cocktail ring — but leave your endless stack of bangles at home!

With a few key pieces, you can also update things you already own and make them feel fresh and festive. You probably already own a white blouse and black skirt. Try layering an inexpensive sequin tank (size up if necessary) over the blouse -- left casually unbuttoned, sleeves rolled up just a bit -- plus black tights and ankle boots for an entirely new look. MINI DRESSES
Yes, even in the winter! – are always safe bets. When going put with the girls, keep in fun by pairing a sequined dress with leggings and booties or tall boots. The dress shown above from Parker can be worn as a dress or tunic, but we recommend it as a dress for women under 5'3 and a tunic for women over 5'3.

PEEK-A-BOO SPARKLE
Not ready to go all over sequins? Pair a metallic dress or fully sequined top under a black blazer. Metallic and sequins scream fun and the blazer will help make the loop not too over the top.

EVENING SHORTS
Shorts are probably not your first thought when choosing your outfit, but maybe they should be. They’re unexpected but so very chic with the right styling. Keep it simple with dark colors. Look for sequined options. As far as color, you can go monochromatic and wear a black blouse, shoes, and accessories and use accessories for gorgeous pop of color. Or wear colored shorts (bronze and jewel tones such as purple, emerald green and royal blue are hot this season) and tone them down with a black top and leggings.

Fall 2011 Web Photo Shoot

We always say this, but it's been too long since we last posted! Certainly trying our best to post at least once a month (and keep the content fun & interesting). Speaking of fun stuff . . .

We had a photo shoot this week for the home page of our website. After shooting catalog photos all summer, it was a nice to do some fashion shots, with the beautiful Chicago skyline as our backround (thanks R. Hanel for the location idea). It was on and off rain all day, but it cleared up just in time for our shoot. As usual, it was a pleasure shooting with MUAs/Hair - Carol Wood, Kerre Berry and Anita Arsova and the models from Ford. And, we can not say thanks enough to Haute Pink! They provided all of the shoes and most of the jewelry for the shoot (look for some cross promotions between The Frock Shop and Haute Pink next spring).

Here are a few "Behind the Seams" shots . . .

We love our founder Jen's work-out wear next to a fully sequined dress, LOL. We found out that one of our models Cody, both models and works at a south loop lounge that we go to often. Small world!!

Photo shoots are one of the fun things that we do here at The Frock Shop. We are constantly thinking of ways to make different & creative shoots, making each shoot better than the last.

Our customers love it when they can see our dresses on real women and real bodies and do a great job accessorizing their Frock Shop dresses. So this got us thinking . . . let's use real women in our next shoot! Here is what we are looking for:

a woman who actively participate in pageants

a woman who is getting married in 2012

a woman who is a singer or musician (or often performs on stage)

a female high school senior (going to prom)

You do not have to be a professional model. You just have to love being in front of the camera!

You will be "dolled up" by a professional hair & make-up team and you will be able to wear the dress that you shoot in (or any other dress of your choice) to your next event. After the photos are published on our NEW website, you will be able to keep your favorite shot from the shoot for your own personal use.

We also had a great shoot coordinator (Elayne E.) and wonderful wardrobe assistants (Anne K., Aisha P., Aisha N. and Catrina F.) Seeking Spring 2011 Interns

My very first job was working with a group called the JCPenney S.T.A.F.F. S.T.A.F.F. was an acronym for Special Teen Advisors for Fashion. It was such as awesome job because we got to do fashion shows for JCPenney and assist with community and special events that were sponsored by JCPenney. We even we even met with the regional buyer to give our feedback on the clothes that were carried in the Juniors department at JCPenney. As an avid lover of fashion, it was a dream job for me (way better than working at McDonalds), and was considered to be a highly coveted (LOL) job for teenage girls in Birmingham at the time. I say all of this to say . . .

The Frock Shop has lofty growth goals over the next year, which has made us start to seriously think about building our team. Now, we are not ready to hire anyone full time (or even part-time for that matter), but we do need people that can assist us on a regular basis with projects. Therefore, we are looking for our first official intern. Here are a list of things that our SPRING 2011 INTERN will do:

• Coordinate 2011 model call (screen models when they arrive, take snapshots of each model, communicate with models pre-shoot) (1 Saturday)
• Assist with The Frock Shop photo shoot (3-day shoot – help set up for shoot, help models get dressed & keep dresses organized before, during and after shoot)
• Organize storage units (steam dresses, organize dresses by size, clean units (1 day, needs to be done before and after shoot)
• Research pricing for retail equipment, flyers, business cards, garment bags, etc. (1/2 day - can be done at home)
• Put together rolling racks and other retail basic retail equipment (at TFS storage facility – 1 day)
• Assisting 1-2 Saturdays with dress rental clients (4 hours commitment each Saturday)
• Place Frock Shop flyers in various local businesses and restaurants in Chicago (1 day - subject to intern having car)
• Drop off/pick-up dresses from our seamstress in Tinley Park (1 day - subject to intern having car)

UPDATE - This internship is paid. Pay is hourly and is dependent upon experience. You will have the opportunity to work with some of the best models and make-up artists in Chicago and gain valuable experience with Chicago’s only dress rental service. One thing that I cannot stress enough is that we take our intern program very seriously. We will train interns on our business and they will be considered a part of The Frock Shop team. We would like to have our interns work with us on a regular basis and we hope that we can bring this intern on part-time in the near future. The CONTACTS that will be made are priceless and the experience that you will receive is perfect to put on any business or fashion merchandising major’s resume. And, this is not only open to students. If you are interested in a business or fashion career, this would be a great way to transition and get some REAL experience.

The internship will last about 1 ½ weeks in April. If everything goes as planned, we will need to use this intern every month, for week long projects, especially after our website launches in May. The project focus many change from month to month. Some future projects include event planning (website launch party), online customer service, logistics/order fulfillment, customer focus groups, buying (bridal). These are projects that require regular attention and we hope to that our intern can help us on a regular basis in these areas this summer and fall.

The internship will take place in the south loop (24th & State), which is very close to major expressways and ½ mile from the CTA red line stop. We look for candidates that are reliable, organized and honest. A love of fashion helps too!

When is your store opening? This is one of our most frequently asked questions. Well, there will be no store. But there will be an opportunity for women across the U.S. to rent dresses from The Frock Shop. We are very excited to announce that we have decided to go online! Here is what led us to our decision . . .

For the past six months, we have been storing our dresses at a storage facility in the south loop of Chicago. Of course, the original intent of the storage space was for dress storage only, until our store opened. But when we began marketing The Frock Shop, we immediately started getting calls from women requesting to see all of our dresses and try them on. We were missing out on business! We could not wait until our store opened.

This demand was so great that we talked to the managers of our storage facility, LifeStorage Centers, and asked them if we could bring our clients in to view and try on dresses (many thanks to LifeStorage, who operate very clean & climate controlled storage facilities in Chicago and the suburbs). We set up one of our units like a mini dressing room for women to try on dresses. We invested in rolling racks, hangers, chairs and a table - everything we needed to make our space feel less like a storage space and more like a boutique. For the past four months, we have been allowing people to come to our storage space and we just started a Weekly Style Night for people to visit us, no appointment needed. Since we do not have a store, this has worked out really well for us. But most importantly, we have been able to learn a lot about our customers and what women want and need when renting a dress.

So why are we going online? Well first of all, we get a million calls from out-of-state customers for dress rentals (and this is with minimal marketing). When I developed this whole dress rental idea, I knew that in order to be successful, we would need a large number of dresses for people to choose from. Therefore, as a relatively new business, we have been investing 70% of our capital in inventory. This strategy has worked well for us and we find that the more variety and sizes we have, the more rentals we have. But, if we had a store, we would be paying thousands of dollars in overhead each month and we certainly would not be able to buy as many dresses. Our business thrives on inventory turn, and being online will allow us to reach a wider audience. So I asked some of my most valued customers if they would rent a dress online. The majority of the responses were yes (with a few caveats that we will address). So the decision to go online was made!

So what are our plans after we go online? We have about 125 wedding dresses and almost 100 cocktail and evening gowns in stock, and this number is growing weekly. As our inventory grows, we will need more space. Our next goal is to move into our own office that will house our staff and all of our dresses. This space will not be a storefront, but a hybrid office/warehouse/dressing room. Why a dressing room? Since we will always need to have a place to store our dresses, we might as well get the most that we can out of our space and dedicate a small area where women can try dresses on. We will continue with our style nights, occasionally opening our facility to the public allowing Chicago women to try on dresses in person to rent or purchase. This will allow us to always stay in direct contact with our customers, allowing us to see how our dresses fit on a variety of body types and getting in-person feedback regarding our products and service. This will help us to continuously evolve our business.

We want to make sure that our online dress rental site is everything that YOU want and need it to be. So we developing a survey to get your thoughts. This survey will be posted in a few days and everyone who fills it out will get 50% off their first dress rental when our site launches, sometime this fall. Over the next few weeks, our current website and promotional materials will change to reflect the fact that we will be going online.

How To Take Your Measurements

When purchasing your wedding dress, prom dress or evening gown, do not feel bad if you fit in a size 12, when you are really a size 10. Special occasion dresses run much smaller than normal clothes. When shopping for dresses (especially online), it is always good to know your measurements. Most designers post size charts for thier dresses on their website. The key to having a fun and stress free prom is to plan ahead. Leading up to such a big event, it is easy to forget some of the little (but oh-so important) details. Getting organized will help to avoid any last minute emergencies. The day of the prom will be very busy - get as much organized before the day as you possibly can! Here are some prom tips on what you should consider, as well as a checklist that you can refer to.

4 Months Before Your Prom...
- Work out your budget (start saving money if necessary)
- Look around at the various dresses available

3 Months Before Your Prom...
- Purchase (or reserve, if you are renting) your dress.
- Purchase your prom accessories to co-ordinate with your dress.
- Order your limousine, making sure to record the time, date and name of the person you talked to.
- Make restaurant reservations, again making sure you record the details of your call.
- Start working out to tone your muscles.

2 Months Before Your Prom...
- If your dress needs altering in any way, make sure you make the appointment now (look in the yellow pages under custom tailor).
- Select the undergarments for your dress (and try everything on together to make sure it is right!)
- Purchase your prom shoes. If you are going to have them dyed to match your dress, do this now.
- If you are getting your hair done by a hair salon, make two hair appointments (the first for a trial run, so you know what it looks like, and the second one on prom day).
- Make a manicure appointment.

6 Weeks Before Your Prom...
- Purchase the prom tickets.
- If you are doing your own hair, start experimenting to find a style you like.

4 Weeks Before Your Prom...
- Start wearing your shoes around the house to break them in (there is nothing worse than wearing new shoes for the first time at a big event!)
- If they haven't met your date already, introduce him to your parents.
- Experiment with different make-up colors that complement your skin tone and match your prom dress.
- Start drinking lots of water instead of juice, soft drink, etc.
- If you suffer from acne, you may want to look at the various acne treatments available.

3 Weeks Before Your Prom...
- Have your trial hairstyle at the hair salon (if you aren't doing it yourself).
- If you are planning on having a bikini and/or underarm wax, stop shaving.
- Confirm your limousine, restaurant, manicure and hair appointments.
- If you are going to use it, try out your sunless tanning lotion.
- Make sure your make-up is correct, and that you don't have any allergies. This is also a good time to experiment with your make-up.
- Try on your dress, to make sure that it is still the right fit. Organise any needed alterations.

2 Weeks Before Your Prom...
- Purchase those last minute items - camera film, pantyhose, etc. Make sure you try the pantyhose on with the dress to check the color is correct.
- Get your bikini/underarm wax.

Prom Day!
- Eat a healthy breakfast and lunch.
- Go to your hair, nails and makeup appointments (as appropriate). Make sure to wear a button down shirt for your hair appointment!
- Pick up your dates boutonniere and place in your refrigerator.
- Pack some extra cash in your purse.
- Make sure your parents take some photos of you and your date, in case there are any problems with the professional pictures.
- Most importantly - relax, have a great time, and don't get too stressed!

Which Shade of White Is Right For You?

Wearing the color white is not only for weddings. Despite popular belief, you can wear white year round, as long as it is in the right shade. The key to finding your shade is knowing your skin tone. Here are our suggestions for choosing the right shade of white for your wedding dress, evening gown or prom dress:

- Fair Skin: you'll look best in yellow-ivories and warmer natural colors. You should probably steer clear of stark white, though -- it may wash you out.

- Medium Skin with pink undertones: opt for creamier colors.

- Medium with yellow undertones: try diamond whites or champagne.

- Dark Skin: most shades of white will complement your skin. If you have yellow or olive undertones, avoid yellow-ivory whites. Try a stark white or even rum pink.

Homecoming Dresses are Arriving Weekly!

The older we get, the less it seems we want to experiment with color. Black is the mainstay and we can always rely on a little black dress when we have an event to go to. On the other hand, teenagers experiment with color and as a result there are a ton of cute & colorful options for HC dresses. This is why I love buying homecoming dresses. We just got an awesome Sticks & Stones dress in (see pic). The color is a brilliant turquoise (looks periwinkle blue in the photo, but it is turquoise. Size 8 only) and is sure to make you stand out amongst the crowd. It's such a fun dress and is an example of a major HC trend this season, short dresses. Girls are opting for short and flirty styles, which is a trend that emerged for prom 2009. Sticks & Stones makes reasonably priced dresses, so we are able to rent this dress for only $49. If you were to buy it, you would pay $140. We are also very excited that this dress will also be featured in the October issue of Goddess Girl Magazine, which is a fab online magazine for teenage girls. Stay tuned for shoot photos.

Wedding Dress Shopping 101

I posted this last year, but I get so many questions about the process of buying a dress, I thought it was worth re-posting:

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU BUY YOUR WEDDING DRESS:

1) DECIDE ON YOUR WEDDING LOCATION, THEN THE DRESS - Oh, the two dress bride. I meet so many women who have purchased TWO dresses because they changed their mind about the wedding venue AFTER they purchased their dress. This almost happened to me. Determine where you will have your wedding because it certainly will dictate what type of dress you will wear. Luckily at the Frock Shop, when you place your hold fee for your dress, you have up until 30 days before the event date to cancel & get your money back. This is a great option.

2) START EARLY - A lot of our rentals are from customers who have found what they want and then contact us to see if we can get it for them to rent. We can usually find the dress you want, but we need TIME to do it. We are lucky enough to work with some great suppliers who have many dresses in stock, but if they do not have what you want, your dress will have to be ordered. Special orders take at least 2-3 months for wedding dresses and 1-2 months for special occasion dresses. Lead times for popular styles can be even longer. The earlier you let us know what you want, the quicker we can find it!

3) ALTERATIONS - Did you know that it usually takes 2-3 visits to your seamstress to get your dress to fit? Visit your seamstress early. This can be anywhere between 30 - 60 days depending on how busy your dress alterations shop is. And don't forget to bring your shoes and any undergarments that you will be wearing on your wedding or event day. This means that you need to start shopping for these items shortly after you have rented your dress. We work with some great seamstresses in the Chicago area and we would be happy to refer them to you, even if you don't rent from us. Now that's service!

4) NEW - This may sound crazy, but when I found my wedding dress, I thought that I could go home with it. No, no, no. All wedding dresses found in stores are samples. Once you find what you want, the bridal store will to order the dress in your size. I was excited to take my dress home with me, but found out I could not. Call me crazy, but I did not know this!

Our friend's wedding in Mexico City was awesome! The bride wore a gorgeous dress. It was a strapless style, silk bodice with hand beaded sequins & lace overlay and cascading layers of silk ruffles at the bottom. It was the perfect style for a stylish & modern bride who was having a traditional Mexican catholic wedding. Her lovely bridesmaids wore long navy blue bridesmaids dresses, in their style choice (one shoulder, strapless or v-neck, with v-neck being the most popular option). I also love the color choice. My parents went to a 50th birthday party for my aunt a few weeks ago. It was a formal affair and the hostess requested that everyone dress accordingly. Hot Tips for Planning a Destination Wedding

So far, I have been invited to three weddings this year. Of the three, two are destination weddings. As we all know, destination weddings are wildly popular these days. After I had my destination wedding, a lot of brides-to-be asked me for tips & advice to help them plan their weddings. Here are some of my top tips when planning a destination wedding:

1) Have your wedding at a hotel that has a wedding coordinator or event coordinator who has experience with planning weddings. There is already enough stress when it comes to having a out-of-town wedding and there is nothing worse than having a unorganized wedding planned by someone that does not know what he/she is doing. Our coordinator at The Frenchman's Reef in St. Thomas was great.

2) Refer your guests to a travel agent for their booking. It is a misconception that travel agents charge you extra. Travel agents get kick-backs from hotels. They do not make their money off of you. Sometimes an agent can save you money, and sometimes you are better off booking yourself, but a lot of guests find comfort in knowing that if they wish, they can make one phone call and book all of their travel plans. We used Freedom Travel in New Jersey, which I highly recommend.

3) A lot of guests appreciated the fact that we booked transportation for them from their hotel to our welcome reception, wedding and wedding dinner. Transportation was something that we planned at the last minute and it was one of the best uses of our budget. Our guests loved it. Not sure where you can cut the costs to fit this in? Don't waste extra money on flowers, the atmosphere of a beach wedding is enough. Put your budget towards something more practical that will be useful for you and your guests.

4) Ship all of your wedding programs, table decorations, welcome baskets, favors, etc. in advance to the attention of the wedding coordinator at the hotel. Do not take all of this stuff with you on the plane!!! Planes charge extra for extra bags & extra weight. Save yourself some money and stress by shipping it in advance - that way it is taken care of.

5) This tip is from my hubby - have your honeymoon at another hotel, or an island nearby to where you are staying, not the same place you had your wedding. My husband hated the fact that we ran into our wedding guests during our honeymoon. You want to feel like you are on vacation, and running into guests asking how married life is will get really old!!!

And last but not least, rent your wedding dress from the Frock Shop (you know I had to throw that one in there!). Renting your dress allows you to save money for a more practical and longer-lasting use, like the down payment on a house or to open a savings account for you and your new family!

The Summer of the DRESS!

It has finally gotten a little warmer in Chicago (not as warm as summer should be, but warmer none the less). My friends and I were at the infamous Chicago Old School Picnic this weekend and saw a ton of gorgeous gals in fabulous dresses. Actually, 3 out of 4 of us wore dresses, even my sister, who is not a "dress girl". From short to maxi, the dress is the perfect summer staple. Got us thinking . . . should The Frock Shop offer dress rentals for resorts/summer vacations? Like the one posted here from Victoria's Secret? The Frock Shop is focusing on wedding and evening gown rental right now, but it's something that we plan to do in full force next summer. Summer Focus Group for Teenage Girls

We are excited to partner with the Goddess Girl Magazine summer focus group. This workshop will teach girls ages 11-16 about self-esteem, fashion, creative writing and beauty. TFS is giving promotional items for the girls and is co-sponsoring the food along with Reggio's Pizza. What a great way to get input from the girls!
